There are many reasons why an individual should be a Christian, each of which is valid. If we think about it, everyone should want to be one. There are no good reasons why one should not choose to become a child of God. In this article, I want to suggest several reasons why one should be a Christian.

ONE SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE A SINNER IS UNFIT TO MEET GOD – Man is separated from God because of sin (Isaiah 59:1, 2). So long as sin remains between God and man, man will remain unfit to meet God. Given the fact God is “holy”, man should seek to become holy as He is, as instructed by God (1 Peter 1:15, 16). Since it is clear that all accountable people have sinned (Romans 3:23) none of us, if we have not had our sins forgiven, would be fit to meet God. Wisdom clearly indicates that we should be prepared to meet God since we are going to do so someday at Judgment (Hebrews 9:27). The saint and the sinner will stand before God on the judgment day, being judged according to how they have lived their lives (Romans 14:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10). On that day, the saint will be welcomed home (Matthew 25:21) while the sinner will be turned away (Matthew 25:41).

ONE SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE GOD HAS PROVIDED SALVATION – God has provided salvation for man even while he was in a lost condition (Romans 5:8). God gave His Son for a sinful world (John 3:16). In thinking of this, we see the necessity of the shed blood of Jesus (Hebrews 9:22). This is so because it is only by the blood of Christ that sins are remitted (Matthew 26:28; 1 Peter 1:18, 19). The blood of Christ continues to cleanse one from their sin after they have turned to Jesus (1 John 1:7). The New Testament teaches us that the church is composed of the saved (Acts 2:47), and the Lord purchased the church with his blood (Acts 20:28).

ONE SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE GOD OFFERS SALVATION NOW – The gospel of Christ is universal in power, reaching to the furthest parts of the world (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15). The invitation to salvation has been extended to all by the Lord (Matthew 11:28-30; Romans 1:16; Revelation 3:20). In association with this invitation is a wonderful promise (Mark 16:16). However, there is a great urgency in all of this. The Apostle Paul indicated that “now” is the time to obey the gospel because the present is the only time we have possession of (2 Corinthians 6:2).

ONE SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE LIFE IS UNCERTAIN -This present life is uncertain. However, the life that follows is certain. The scriptures seek to impress upon man the uncertainty of this life. Life is compared to a vapor (James 4:13-15). It is compared to a shadow (Job 14:1, 2). It is compared to the grass and the flower that quickly fades away (1 Peter 1:24). David spoke of the uncertainty of life as there being but a step between life and death (1 Samuel 20:3). Since none of us is guaranteed tomorrow, it would do us well to live each day as if it were our last.

ONE SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE OF THE CERTAIN PUNISHMENT THAT AWAITS THOSE WHO REJECT CHRIST IN THIS LIFE – The judgment of God is certain (Hebrews 9:27). No one will escape that event. The Scriptures are clear in their warning relative to what awaits the disobedient: They will be punished, having been judged by the Word they have rejected (John 12:48; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9).

If you are not a Christian, will you become one now? Do not wait until it is too late. You may never have another chance to become one.
